Jebsen & Co. Ltd. (Jebsen) is one of the few foreign firms that has had a long history of continuous involvement in Hong Kong and China. This extends from its early years as a pioneer trader to its current role as a leading marketing, services and distribution corporation in the region.
Founded in 1895 by Jacob Jebsen and Heinrich Jessen, Jebsen originally operated as a shipping agency, but soon branched out into the import and export trade, as the China coast became the new frontier for international trade.
An early partnership and one of the new company's most strategic contracts was with Badisch Anilin und Soda Fabrik (BASF) for whom Jebsen traded in indigo dye. The dye was soon used on an industrial scale and Jebsen, having introduced it to China, secured a monopoly contract to supply it.
As its product list grew, so too did Jebsen's network of offices and alliances throughout the region. Branch offices were opened in Shanghai in 1903 and Guangzhou in 1907, and affiliate companies were set up along the coast between Tianjin in the north and Guangzhou in the south. This network facilitated the export of Chinese products to Europe, North America and Australia and the import of Jebsen trademark products such as Blue Girl Beer, which became increasingly popular in the region. More and more products and commodities joined its diverse portfolio of goods allowing Jebsen to establish a firm foothold in China trade.
